Overview of Research & Development Capabilities

Baosteel attaches great importance to product development and constant improvement. Shortly after its establishment, Baosteel Technology Research Center was set up and was recognized as a national technology center in November, 1994. With the growth of Baosteel, the center was transformed into Baosteel Central Research Institute in 2012.

Responsible for research and development concerning significant, cutting-edge, and fundamental technologies for the Company, Baosteel Central Research Institute boasts well-equipped steel smelting and rolling facilities for pilot trials and state-of-the-art analysis and testing equipment. Its analysis and testing research center has been recognized by China National Accreditation Service for Conformity Assessment as a Provider of Proficiency Testing Schemes. According to state-level assessments of corporate technology centers, Baosteel Central Research Institute has been ranked No.1 in the metallurgical industry for five consecutive years.

After nearly three decades of development, Baosteel Central Research Institute now covers an area of 306 acres with fixed assets of RMB 2.13 billion, 18 specialized laboratories, and 103 large-sized precision instruments. It employs 630 researchers, among whom there are 15 employees entitled to special government allowances, 71 professor-level senior engineers, 23 Baosteel Experts, 72 chief engineers and nearly 50 overseas returnees. More than 60% of the workforce has received master's degrees or doctoral degrees. It has six product technology centers, six process equipment technology centers and three technical support teams.
